In the mainly Catholic south and east of the Netherlands, Carnival is celebrated lavishly in the early spring. Brightly coloured Carnival processions make their way through the city centres.
In July, Rotterdam organises a major Caribbean summer carnival, a celebration with its origins in the Netherlands Antilles.
